Introduction<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Pig iron<\/b>, also known as\u00c2\u00a0crude iron<\/b>, is an\u00c2\u00a0intermediate good\u00c2\u00a0used by the\u00c2\u00a0iron industry\u00c2\u00a0in the production of\u00c2\u00a0steel. It is developed by\u00c2\u00a0smelting\u00c2\u00a0iron ore\u00c2\u00a0in a\u00c2\u00a0blast furnace. Pig iron has a high\u00c2\u00a0carbon\u00c2\u00a0content, typically 3.8\u00e2\u20ac\u201c4.7%,<\/sup>\u00c2\u00a0along with\u00c2\u00a0silica\u00c2\u00a0and other\u00c2\u00a0dross, which makes it\u00c2\u00a0brittle\u00c2\u00a0and not useful directly as a material except for limited applications.
\nPig iron is the intermediate product of smelting iron ore with a high-carbon fuel such as coke, usually with limestone as a flux. Charcoal and anthracite have also been used as fuel. Pig iron has a very high carbon content, typically 3.5 to 4.5%, which makes it very brittle and not useful directly as a material except for limited applications.

Shipping and Logistic<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Merchant pig iron is generally handled, transported, and stored a number of times prior
\nto being used for steel or iron castings production:
\na) within the production site from caster to temporary storage
\nb) to trucks and rail cars for transfer to the bulk terminal
\nc) within outbound bulk terminals for temporary storage
\nd) to vessels for maritime carriage to inbound bulk terminals
\ne) to barges, trucks, and rail cars for delivery to customers
\nf) within stockyard of customer site<\/p>\n

Pig Iron Ingot Handling<\/strong>
\nAt the production site, pig iron ingots can be loaded into trucks or rail cars by the use of
\ntraditional equipment, such as front-end loaders, mobile cranes with grabs and magnets.
\nFor heavy and coarse materials, trimming grabs are the most efficient solution. Trimming
\ngrabs are in operation for handling coarse materials like stones, ferro-chrome, pig iron,
\nDRI and HBI. Trimming grabs are special grabs with a very wide opening and large
\nfootprint which is extremely efficient during cleaning-up operations. Because the shells
\nhave a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153horizontal closing path\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the bulk material is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153scraped together\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, instead of taking a
\nbite out of the material. This makes it possible to ensure a good filling of the grab without
\nhaving to penetrate the material.<\/p>\n
